About 2 years ago I wanted to convert a batch of old film slides to digital pictures. I bought an epson 900 scanner and owned a nikon 990 digital camera, with an attachment that would hold the slides in front of the camera at the minimum camera focus distance.
As to which method is the best, the pictures speak for themselves. An even greater difference was the time it took to make each picture. Scanner: 45 seconds, Camera 1 second. Something to consider if you ever have a similar project.
The images below have been cropped to actual pixel size. The place? Disney of course, circa 1975.
But how, you ask? I present to you the "Happenstance slide copier" for the Nikon CoolPix 990.
